Success Story

Development of a test automation landscape at Uelzener Versicherungen

accompio developed a test automation framework and test infrastructure that reduces manual testing effort and can provide an early indication of software quality at specific test cycles.

Customer

Uelzener Insurance

Uelzener Versicherungen has been supporting people and animals for over 150 years. With over 300 employees and more than 500,000 customers, the specialist insurer is one of the most popular providers for insurance relating to dogs, horses, and cats, particularly in the areas of liability, illness, and accident risks. In addition to insuring animals belonging to private customers, the company also insures businesses such as pet boarding kennels, animal shelters, and dog training schools, as well as farmers who keep livestock.

The challenge

Quality assurance of a complex legacy system with a high variety of test cases

A key challenge was the Uelzen company's responsibility for the correct functioning of the inventory system. With the support of accompio PrimeTec, a test strategy with around 1,000 automated test cases for approximately 80 products was developed for this purpose.

Together with the development team, a Docker container based on Ubuntu was created, which allows for the parallel operation of multiple build agents. This enables about 100 tests per hour and approximately 900 tests to be run automatically overnight.

Objective

Increasing efficiency and coverage with test automation

Refinement and standardisation of manual test cases

Manual test cases have been revised, refined, and enhanced with preconditions to create a stable foundation for test automation. The focus was on securing contract creation as a core function.

Setting up a Stable Test Automation Architecture

For the JavaFX-based system, an automation solution has been built using Java, Maven, and Jenkins. Concepts such as TestNG, the Page Object Pattern, and Extent Reports form a scalable test framework.

Parameterisation to increase test coverage

Variable test data was stored in a MySQL database and dynamically integrated into test cases. This allowed for increased test coverage without redundant test logic.

Using container technologies to stabilise infrastructure

Docker containers enable a flexible, reproducible, and stable test environment. This forms the basis for scalable further development of the test infrastructure.

Enhancing Quality Assurance with Automated Document Checks

Contract-relevant documents can be automatically checked using a PDF comparison with pdfcompare. Dynamic content is hidden while technical discrepancies are identified.

Introduction of continuous end-to-end testing across web portals

Automated Selenium tests check contract closures via web portals right through to the core system. This enables cross-system quality assurance.

Results

Test automation designs efficient workflows.

The consistently established test automation enables Uelzener to conduct early and reliable quality assessments of its software, significantly reduces manual testing effort, and is continuously developed with accompio.
