Performance measurement of video streaming servers at Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk

MDR commissioned accompio to carry out a load and performance test on selected streaming servers. The aim of the tests was to verify the load limit per streaming server, which are used for the in-house editorial system “Resy”, and to identify any anomalies.

Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk is a regional broadcaster responsible for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Its diverse television, radio and internet programmes reflect the diversity and identity of Central Germany. MDR's social mission includes information, education, advice and entertainment programmes.

The challenge

Coordination and execution of complex load tests in a production-related environment

As part of a proof of concept, the feasibility of the test project was initially examined and, based on this, a test concept with a rough load test plan was created. The execution required a team of six people, who were responsible for organisation, monitoring and test data provision in addition to test execution.

One challenge was the production-near environment with three streaming servers and load balancers. To avoid overlap with real load, close coordination with other departments was necessary, so that the tests could be carried out in a controlled manner and without affecting live operation.

Development of a powerful load test toolchain

The use of JMeter in combination with specialised video streaming plug-ins and Check MK monitoring ensures realistic simulation and holistic monitoring of the streaming infrastructure.

Realistic test data generation and scenario design

With 1,000 video files provided and defined thread groups, practical load scenarios - such as a constant 200 parallel streams - are mapped in order to validly analyse the system behaviour under controlled conditions.

Transparent monitoring and structured evaluation

During the test runs, the load generator and streaming server are continuously monitored in order to precisely record system statuses. Analyses are carried out using detailed HTML reports and specific streaming metrics such as lag time and buffer time.

Identification of load limits and system behaviour

The aim is to systematically determine the performance limits of the streaming servers as well as the behaviour under normal and overload conditions and to make well-founded statements on stability and scalability.

Derivation of concrete optimisation measures

Based on the findings, recommendations for action are developed together with the project participants in order to further develop performance, stability and system architecture in a targeted manner.

Ensuring an objective and subjective quality assessment

In addition to technical key figures, manual audio-visual checks are also included in the assessment in order to obtain a holistic picture of the quality of the streaming experience.

Transparent and well-founded performance analysis

With the methods and metrics shown, it was possible to describe the load limit of the individual streaming servers and the underlying behaviour of the system under normal and overload conditions.
