Check PCs automatically using a checklist

The administration of PCs and laptops is time-consuming and costly – whether during rollout or in ongoing operation. An automated PC checklist can help here.

Making vast numbers of laptops fit for home working in the shortest possible time – this is a challenge many companies faced during the pandemic. The systems house accompio uses a self-developed, automated PC checklist for this purpose.

An appropriate driver is missing here, a required update isn't installed there – IT departments are particularly in demand in Corona times. Not only do many computers need to be administered remotely, but at the same time, in view of ever-new lockdowns and public appeals to work from home, many colleagues need to be supplied with new hardware.

Nowadays, nothing should really go wrong when installing computers. IT technicians can handle this with in-house management solutions according to a predefined standard in just a few clicks – the buzzword here is IT Service Automation. But what if something is missing after all? This should be discovered during the subsequent acceptance test of the system. However, this is usually still carried out with pen and paper. A method where something can easily be overlooked. And then, a computer might be delivered to the user without updated virus protection or with a missing driver. To prevent this, the IT service provider accompio developed an automated PC checklist that checks the computers for these issues.

Home Office Security: Checklist with Benefits

For the In-house development The Lower Saxony region decided this because they couldn't find a product on the market that met their requirements. The checklist was further developed over the years. Initially, it was a small batch script that called a few commands, checked values in the registry, and then returned an OK or FAILED. As more and more detailed checks, as well as graphical output, were added, the checklist was later based on PowerShell further developed. The latest version, which is currently under development, will now be C# created.

„What can be achieved with a click can also be automated. Previously, every device had to be manually checked by a technician. Everything was then ticked off on paper on a pre-prepared checklist and subsequently filed for documentation.“ – Sven Hammer (IT Systems Consultant accompio)

„When performing a new installation or an update on a large number of PCs automatically, each machine is assigned a target completion time for the installation. This allows an automated checklist to verify, after a predefined time window, whether everything has proceeded correctly and if the installation is now complete.“ – Sven Hammer (IT Systems Consultant accompio)

Even though the checklist is played out centrally, it checks each computer individually. If everything is in order, the corresponding message is sent out and the PC can be used and/or delivered. If something is not correct, an appropriate message will also be displayed, and an automatic ticket will be created for the IT technician and sent to them, for example, with the help of an email robot. In addition, the results can be stored locally or on a file share.

„We implement the automated PC checklist for our customers within half a day. We currently work with systems from HP, Lenovo and Dell.“ – Sven Hammer (IT Systems Consultant accompio)

In doing so, the Tool is generally supplied with the rollout. If users wish, the tool remains with them so that they can check their PCs at regular intervals.

The accompanying offer is constantly being expanded and adapted to the needs of users. Thus, one can also imagine licensing the automated PC checklist to users who are not direct customers of the system house.
