Managed backup – safeguarding the existence of your company
Managed backup – safeguarding the existence of your company

In today’s business world, data is the be-all and end-all. It is the lifeblood of your company, without it your business would grind to a halt. That’s why a secure and reliable backup solution is essential to protect your business data. Managed backup services offer companies an effective and cost-efficient way to ensure the security of their data.
Backup – what is it?
A backup is the protection of data by means of a backup copy. This can be done either manually or automatically using specific software. This principle allows you to protect your data and save the existence of your company in an emergency.
A distinction is also made between a local backup and a cloud backup (offsite backup). Essentially, both variants describe a type of backup creation and storage and cover different risk scenarios.
Local backup
A local backup is a copy of your data that is stored on an external hard disk, a storage system with hard disks or tapes or another local storage device.
This type of data backup is important as a basis, as it provides a quick and easy way to restore your data in the event of accidental deletion or overwriting. The local backup can also be used in more critical scenarios. A classic example here is the restoration of data in the event of a hardware defect. However, the central prerequisite here is always that the local backup data is intact and under your own control. This is often not guaranteed in the case of classic disaster scenarios such as a fire in the office building or water damage.
Cloud backup (offsite backup)
This type of backup is the life insurance for your company and an indispensable factor in the risk planning of any responsible company.
Cloud backups or offsite backups are stored in encrypted form on remote servers outside the local data structure. This separate storage location means that the backups can continue to exist even if the data is lost or compromised at the local site (e.g. due to disasters such as fire or water damage, but also cyber attacks).
Restoring data from a cloud or offsite backup usually takes a little longer for technical reasons due to the need to transfer it over the internet. In the situations concerned, however, this time factor is usually secondary to the fact that the data can be restored at all.
The golden 3-2-1 backup rule
It can’t be mentioned often enough – the 3-2-1 rule of backup. This involves the clever combination of different types of data backup.
The 3-2-1 backup rule states that
- three copies of your data are necessary to ensure optimum security,
- these copies are to be stored on two different media and
- Your data is also stored in one different location (offsite, e.g. in the cloud) to protect it from local events such as fires and floods.
Your advantages of a managed backup
Having backups in an emergency is essential. In everyday working life, it is important to know that local and cloud backups are created reliably, are functional and that processes are in place to retrieve these backups in an emergency and restore data.
